I was initially a trained art teacher, but worked full time as a studio craft potter for many years; exhibiting in both Australia and throughout New Zealand. This changed in the nineties when I took up a new challenge; seeking to understand colour, light and textures in more depth. Now, as a full time artist, I work mainly in oil on canvas. I generally paint in a contemporary representational style but always enjoy the challenge of working in a diverse range of approaches and applications, from, smooth and colourful to monochromatic and textures.
I have always been captivated by the serene and natural beauty of New Zealand’s landscape and seascapes; I always endeavour to capture the unique light we enjoy in New Zealand. Over the last thirteen years, I have exhibited in galleries throughout New Zealand, including solo exhibitions.
Most recently I have researched in France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Norway and Australia; as well as New Zealand. The subject matter that inspires me is diverse, as I enjoy a wide range of interests. I feel as comfortable at sea as on the land. The wild spoilt, remote areas inspire me as much as the ancient villages of diverse cultures.
The remote, unspoilt and natural areas of New Zealand are close to my heart; I strive to encourage others to appreciate and protect these special places, along with the creatures that inhabit our beautiful country.
Coming from a gardening family, I love flowers; especially the peony. I choose to paint them at their finest, bigger than life and full of colour. Using multiple layering of high quality paints, I have achieved the essence of these flowers; vibrant colour that truly GLOWS .As well as my oil paintings, I also design and make colourful beaded jewellery, heavily inspired by my recent visits to Europe, together with pieces unique to New Zealand; incorporating greenstone and hand carved Maori artefacts.
My artwork is hung in galleries throughout New Zealand, with many works going to over seas buyers. I am based in Remuera, Auckland and welcome commission work.
Suzanne has a special thank you to acknowledge to Tim Wilson, who’s work has been a great inspiration as well as his ever patient, critiquing of Suzanne’s own technique; has been of infinite value… and to Trevor Platt, another exceptional artist, who also has shared his knowledge with her.
